The Functions of Train Terminals and Airport Terminals
Terminals are essential for train and air travel and can be bought by players in Upland. The choice for the preferred means of transport depends on the availability in the respective cities. For both train and airplane travel it is mandatory to buy a ticket. Whereas Airport terminals have to be directly visited to buy a ticket, train tickets can also be bought if you are bring your block explorer into discovery range of train terminal. All terminals are owned by players (or may be bought by players) and there is only a limited number of them making them quite expensive due to their rarity. Airport terminals usually costs approx. 700k – 2 Mio. UPX but train terminals are much cheaper as they represent a connection to the low-cost city Fresno, which was specially designed for new players. The owner of a terminal receives all visitor fees. Each terminal has a maximum number of possible daily visits that is dependent on the size of the terminal. If that limit is reached players need to visit another terminal which has not reached the daily limit yet. This function shall spread the income of visitor fees around all terminal owners.
Which Cities are available for travelling?
In the current version of Upland you can travel between San Francisco (starter city) and New York City by airplane and between San Francisco and Fresno by train. There is no direct travel option between NYC and Fresno. Fresno has an airport, but it is not accessible in Upland yet.
How to travel to other Cities: Train Terminals
The option to travel by train was introduced with the opening of the city Fresno in October 2020. A one-way ticket from San Francisco to Fresno costs 95 UPX (going into the Community UPX Pool) and it takes about 25 minutes until you arrive at the destination.
To buy a train ticket you have to locate the train symbol on the Upland map. The next step is to either move close to the location of a terminal (block explorer discovery radius) or directly visit a terminal. As trains are a public means of travel terminal owners will not have any option to receive earnings from tickets and have to rely on visitor fees. The train terminals of San Francisco can be found in the northeast of the city in the Mission Bay district. Fresno’s train terminals are located in the center of the city in the Central Fresno district. The screenshots below show you the position of the train symbol in both citites.
The following example will show you how to travel from Fresno to San Francisco:
How to travel to other Cities – Airport Terminals
Similar to the real world you have to buy a plane ticket. To buy a ticket you have to visit an airport terminal.
Let us take a look on how to travel from San Francisco to New York City. The terminals of San Francisco can be found in the southeast outside of the city (see screenshot). Usually you should be able to see aircraft symbols on the map and thus locate the airport. Now you have to zoom into the map and locate the terminal button. If you click on this a new window will ask you which terminal you want to use. Apart from the terminal visitor fee there are currently no differences so you might choose the cheapest one.
Click once more on the terminal symbol to open the flight menu. Here you have to select “New York City – JFK”. It also shows you the estimated time to arrival in real life minutes and the ticket costs. Right after you have bought the ticket you will see a short sequence of your airplane taking off. Afterwards you will see an overview on the flight schedule and the estimated time to arrival will be displayed in form of a countdown.
In the current version of Upland you can’t do anything while being on a plane, so you have to wait until you arrive at the destination.
Costs and Fees for Airline Tickets
A one-way ticket to NYC costs 2580 UPX. If you do not plan to stay in NYC for a longer time you should calculate the costs of 5160 UPX for your round trip plus the visitor fees (20 – 200 UPX per each airport terminal visit).
As for now, the traveling system in Upland is limited to train and airplane travel. However, there are plans for the operation of airlines in a future update (not expected before 2021) to add more functions and earning possibilities for the players. It could also be possible that real airline companies enter the game and operate their brands inside Upland.
Likewise, the team behind Upland has announced more options for travel, such as cars or buses. The buzzwords Uber and Hyperloop were mentioned in the last AMA on Discord. Therefore, we can expect to have a lot of exciting options for travelling inside and across cities. It is estimated that with such a change the movement system of the block explorers will also go under a major revision. Hopefully the random movement will be exchanged and a new one lets the players decide where they want to go and let them choose their preferred means of travel.
